My Beginner Journey with Abstract Watercolor
I didn’t set out to become an abstract watercolor artist.
In fact, I had no plan to explore abstract watercolor as a beginner—but one small moment changed everything.
But one day in May of last year, I came across some beautiful sketchbooks… the kind that make you pause for a second longer than usual. I placed an order, they arrived, the paper was amazing and that small moment led me to Bindi and her watercolor classes.
I signed up for a beginner abstract watercolor course without really knowing what to expect.
And from that day on… I was hooked.
Since last July, I’ve taken several of her classes. I’ve learned techniques, how to stay loose, and how to see opportunities on the page.
My work has softened. It’s become looser.
I approach color, composition, and mark-making in a completely new way.
If you ever get the chance to learn from her, I truly recommend it. She’s an incredible teacher, and you’ll walk away seeing things differently—and more in love with your creative practice.
Here are a few of my very first abstract watercolor attempts:

I still have a long way to go, and to help develop my style, I've dedicated my 100 Day Project to exploring abstract watercolor as a daily creative practice.
I’m currently on Day 37, and there are moments now where my hand moves before my mind catches up. Where I’m not thinking as much about what I should do… and instead following what feels right.
And I’ve started to realize that these pieces aren’t just paintings. They’re small explorations of the soul. Little glimpses into the many layers that make each of us who we are.
I still have a long way to go on this project. I may reach day 100 and not have my abstract watercolor style fully developed but I have found a spark that I know I want to continue exploring long after this project is over.
If there’s anything I hope you take from this, it’s this:
Sometimes all it takes is one small moment of curiosity… one class, one sketchbook, one attempt… and it can open a door you didn’t even know was there.
Maybe this is your sign to follow that pull.
To try something new.
To start before you feel ready.
To let it be messy, imperfect, and completely your own.
Stay Wild 💛
Sophia
